City Guide: A Weekend In Bamberg, Germany

22nd March 2017

A few weeks ago I decided on an impromptu visit to Bamberg, Germany. This small town is situated on Upper Franconia, on the river Regnitz. A large part of this town has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1993. Perhaps it’s not your average destination for a weekend getaway, but let me tell you there really is more than Bratwursts and beer to this town, even though I’m not going to deny that Bratwursts are damn tasty! So here is a mini city guide to some of the places I managed to see, eat and buy.

Places to See

The old town centre is a definite spot to visit and one that you cannot really miss. Often referred to as the Rome of Franconia, there is a mix of medieval and baroque architecture. Bamberg stands on seven hills surrounded by the beautiful countryside. The historical townscape features so many monuments from the 11th to the 18th Century. The Imperial Cathedral of St Peter and St. George is definitely not one to be missed, hard to really as it is one of the most prominent buildings there. Inside you will find the tomb of Pope Clemence II, being the only Papal grave in Germany. Don’t miss the Brückenrathaus, the rose garden with the gorgeous view over the old town. My personal highlights also include the Fisherman’s village known as Little Venice, the tanner’s cottages by the old canal and the Mill district.

Places to Eat & Drink

When in Bamberg one has to try their notorious smoked beer, it would be rude not to! Even if beer isn’t your thing you have to visit the famous Schlenkerla, the historic smoked beer brewery. Featuring a gothic ceiling, it’s quite an impressive space. Tradition and quality play an important part here so make sure to try their food with plenty of Franconia specialities to choose from.If you fancy fusion cuisine then I can’t recommend the Pelikan enough. Food was amazing, portions were generous, lively atmosphere and it felt like a locals favourite. Definitely one to try if you are in Bamberg. During my stay I also tried a new burger place called BurgerHeart. Great choices of burgers also for vegetarians and the decor is spot on. If you’re looking for good Japanese food, then make sure to try out Koi. While roaming around town I also managed to stumble across a really cute bakery, Seel, one not to miss and the floor tiles are divine! If like me you’re a tea lover then you will love Teegiesserei. This tea room has literally hundreds of different tea choices and make sure you try their peanut butter biscuits!

Things to do

There are plenty of lovely antique and interiors shops in the town centre so you literally are spoilt for choice. I stumbled upon a lovely interiors shop called Livsrum where they sell such gorgeous Scandi modern pieces. If you love interiors then you’ll definitely appreciate this gorgeous boutique. While in Bamberg I would also highly recommend a day trip to Coburg. Being the history geek that I am, I was quite excited to visit the home town of Queen Victoria’s husband, Prince Albert. I also managed to squeeze in a quick visit to the tiny town of Sesslach. Definitely a cute one to wander the streets and you’ll notice its large medieval town wall.
