Choosing The Right Chairs

16th October 2012
I’m moving into a new space and I am particularly excited for the obvious reason that I get to decorate! It’s a slightly dark space with terracotta flooring, so it has a very traditional element. I want to mix it up with some modern pieces but still maintain a classic element to the design. I will probably go for a wooden dining table (still deciding) but I need some funky chairs. For me interiors need to have an element of fun, my home needs to be an abode of playfulness. Therefore I want some multicoloured chairs to lift the space up. The problem is which chairs do I choose, I have so many favourites. Who knows maybe I should opt for a mix of different designs to fill my hearts content. Here is a look at the ones that I am particularly drawn to…

The classic Eames DSW chairs – well it’s not really a surprise that it’s at the top of my wish list. Available from Vitra.
I adore these Mika Tolvanen Visu chairs from Muuto – the colours are right up my street.
Ercol, a favourite classic of mine, How can I not resist the temptation of the windsor chair or the Butterfly chair in an array of gorgeous colours.
Kartell’s Louis Ghost chairs & Victoria Ghost chairs have become a statment piece over the last few years. Available from Graham & Green.

Urban Chic with these Tolix classic ‘A’ chairs – I’ll have one in every colour please. Also available from Graham & Green.

Fritz Hansen, Series 7 chairs in Ash finish – I heart for the pink and grey. Available from The Conran Shop.

I love chairs also & I think it's personal at the end of the day. However I going to throw in my opinion:
Timber table and Louis Ghost multicolored is my fav, for creating an old world juxtoposition.
Or the Tolix, another Fav, for a more underground chic look.
I'll leave it up to you but will send u an image on twitter.

You can't really go wrong with any of these. (I particularly like the Series 7 Chairs 🙂

For me, comfort is first. Most of the ones you show are too small for people to sit comfortably in because they are too short in interior depth and width – particularly the Tolix and Ghost. I like a chair that is 21.5" interior depth and 26" wide. Otherwise, you are asking your friends to "perch" on the chair, not sit in it. Also, if you are going to purchase a see-through chair, make sure it is made of Lucite and not polyurethane like the ones you show as they crack and break.

I love all of these 🙂 Spookily, I saw today that Very have come out with cheaper replicas of the Eames DSW and Tolix A chairs!

Personally I find these comfortable….in fact last night I was sitting on an Eames chair at a friends house during dinner – it was totally comfortable. My husband also agreed and he is definitely not tiny. I also own a ghost chair with which I work on all the time…. I appreciate your opinion but personally I am rather sure of these choices… 🙂
