Holiday Travel Guide: Puglia Part Two

25th June 2015

As promised here is my second part of my recent trip to Puglia. On our last day we managed to drive to Gallipoli and Leuca and enjoy some of the scenic views.

Gallipoli

Gallipoli is a town with approximately  20,969 inhabitants, It is located by the Ionian Sea, on the west coast of the Salentina Peninsula. The town of Gallipoli is divided into two parts, the modern and the old city. The new town is the most modern part which has all of the new buildings. The old town is super cute located on a limestone island which is linked to the mainland by a bridge built in the 16th century. It’s lovely to walk around Gallipoli and see all of the interesting buildings and the beautiful small alley ways. It is a very characteristic town and the people are ever so welcoming as you would expect down in the south of Italy.

Santa Maria di Leuca

Santa Maria di Leuca is famous for the iconic lighthouse, it is the second most important lighthouse in Italy, after Genova. It is considered to be the lowest point of the geographical “heel” of Italian peninsula, as well as the meeting point of the waters from the Adriatic Sea and the Ionian Sea.

If you’re looking for beautiful views then this is the place to go to – just mesmerizing!

Basilica, De Finibus Terrae , built to commemorate the passage of St. Peter here during his travel to Italy. Basilica, De Finibus Terrae , built to commemorate the passage of St. Peter here during his travel to Italy.

The iconic lighthouse. The iconic lighthouse.

There were still many places that we wanted to see but ran out of time. We are definitely planning another visit there really soon and on top of my list is to visit the town of Ostuni. Have a look online and you’ll soon understand why.

Another restaurant I can highly recommend is Trattoria Nonno Pici, in the small town of Araya. Expect delicious food and lovely atmosphere.

All in all a visit to Puglia is  definite must! You won’t regret it!

Love Puglia I’ve been going there for 2 years now landing in Brindisi staying in Leece and then travelling around Puglia by day. Love the food, scenery and people, if you go to Lecce check out the Royal Bar it’s brilliant
