One To Watch: Margarita Lorenzo

9th February 2011
A couple of weeks ago I attended a lovely evening organised by Mydeco and had the pleasure of meeting Margarita Lorenzo, designer behind  Chocolate Creative. Margarita creates such lovely handmade and homewares accessories with such a vintage feel to them which I adore. I was very happy when Margarita agreed to answer a few questions as I am sure many of you will love her and her products.

When did you realise you had a passion for design?
It must have been around high school when I was asked what I wanted to study at University and answered that I could only do a degree related to art/design or nothing. I therefore enrolled in a 5 years degree in Fine Art specialising in Graphic Design, that took me from Tenerife, to Barcelona and then the UK.
Where do you inspirations come from?
Mainly From traditional craft and vintage finds, totally love things that have a past, specially furniture, paper goods, typography, the Bauhaus, textiles, etc….as well as travelling and other cultures.
What has been the highlight of your career so far?
Taking the risk of making the transition from graphics to run my own homewares/interiors brand full time, selling my collections at Mint and Loop shops and being featured in blogs such as Decor 8 and Designsponge.

What do you hope to achieve in 5 years time?
To continue growing the business in an organic way, not compromising on quality and values, launching new products to create a unique brand of homeware products, develop a blog/site for the Spanish market and raise the awareness of good quality handmade craft/design products back home. All of this by splitting my time between amazing London and my dear Gran Canaria. Where I hope to open a shop that will sell my products alongside vintage furniture, where people can sit for a coffee, browse magazines and interiors books and take home gorgeous things, all of this with the company and love of my dear ones.
What famous artists/designers do you admire or inspires you the most?
These are my top ones for different reasons: Architect Niemeyer,  William Morris, the Eames, and Lisa Stickley.
What five words best describe you ?
Positive, dynamic, impulsive, dreamer and passionate.

What 5 things couldn’t you live with out?
My family/boyfriend/friends/cat, the sun, the beach, chocolate and interiors magazines/books.

A big thank you to Margarita for taking time in her busy schedule. What you see is what you get with Margarita, she really is so full of life and passionate which is really lovely to see. I would love to visit her one day in her shop in Gran Canaria, it sounds divine 🙂

Thanks for sharing, it's great to see others working in the same craft as yourself and see how they interpret what they use. I especially love the graphics on Margarita's work, it's something I can't do myself.
